Oscar’s Grind

Last updated: 09.01.2024 by Andrew Shepard

The Oscar’s Grind strategy is another strategy that isn’t well-known to most players – and casinos. This is why we have decided to take a closer look at this strategy, especially when you consider the fact that it has been actively discussed by professional roulette. The system is a little more complicated than most, but it can produce some interesting results. It has a rational approach to slowly grinding out a profit, which may appeal to the more patient Australian players among you.

The strategy dated back to around 1965 and was discussed in The Casino Gambler’s Guide book. We will now explain how Oscar’s Grind works and introduce you to its core principles and most important aspects and help you decide if this strategy is for you.

How Oscar’s Grind System Works

Alright, the first thing you will notice is that the algorithm does look a bit confusing, but rest assured that everything is very straightforward once you get the hang of it. Bear with us and see if this system is indeed for you.

  • We only bet even-money outside bets, i.e. Red & Black, Even & Odd, High & Low
  • We stake a AU$ 1 bet first
  • We do not change the amount on a loss and we repeat the base action
  • If we win, we will increase the bet amount by AU$ 1
  • We use this algorithm until we reach a net profit of AU$ 1 – once we reach this we restart the algorithm
  • It’s important to understand that Oscar’s Grind works only with AU$ 1 profit in mind – this means that if you can win more, you should lower your stake. For example, if you are down AU$ 3, you would need to bet AU$ 6 and potentially cover our losses and win AU$ 3 on top. Therefore, we need to reduce the bet size to AU$ 4 so that we are only AU$ 1 unit ahead if we win. It’s a grind.
Oscar’s Grind system

There are some similarities to the Contra Bet system here, although some players are more than happy to liken it to the Paroli. In any event, players have differing opinions about it. Some players argue that you should start a new cycle after 5 consecutive losses, for example. Let’s take a look at 10 imaginary rounds we simulated:

Bet size Result Profit Comment
1 Loss −1 Bet size stays the same
1 Loss −2 Bet size stays the same
1 Loss −3 Bet size stays the same
1 Loss −4 Bet size stays the same
1 Loss −5 Bet size stays the same
1 Win −4 Bet size is 2 units now
2 Loss −6 Bet size remains 2 units
2 Win −4 Bet size increases to 3 units
3 Win −1 Only 2 units needed to achieve profit
2 Win 1 Session ends

Let’s Put Oscar’s Grind to the Test

So, to get a read of how successful Oscar’s Grind can be, we have decided to test it extensively using a Google Sheets simulation and formula. Basically, we gave several players AU$ 1,000 each and put them to try the Oscar’s Grind system over 500 rounds. The chart is going to show what happens in the long-term for each player.

Putting Oscar’s Grind to the Test

As we can see, all four players actually turned a profit – small, but a profit, nevertheless. Player 1 ended up with AU$ 120. Player 3 though gained the least amount - AU$ 74. There were some sharp declines, though. Player 2 almost collapsed under the AU$ 500-bankroll mark, but they recovered nicely and succeeded in the long-term.

Overall, the strategy proved a very slow one, but one that nevertheless delivers on results and a small profit all factors considered. However, sometimes players need to keep chasing the AU$ 1 unit by increasing their wagers again and again. Player 2 had to place a AU$ 67 bet to secure that AU$ 1 profit – but even then, the table limits at most roulette tables are anything between AU$ 200 and AU$ 1000, or even more, which means that Oscar’s Grind strategy almost completely eliminates the risk of ever running out of betting window, making it a perfect strategy to win in the very long-term, albeit a painful one nevertheless.

Not All Is Perfect with Oscar’s Grind

Naturally, there are some pitfalls to be aware of when it comes to Oscar’s Grind. For the most part, this strategy is not entirely perfect and there are things to be mindful of in the long-term. As Player 2’s simulation proved, the strategy may sometimes force you to keep betting a lot more than you would like in order to recoup your losses, and score a AU$ 1 win.

So, as long as you account for the fact that you may run long sessions before you can actually recover a bet, you should be fine. Of course, you still need to account for the luck factor here, as there is a lot to still do and try in the long-term. The good news is that despite these pitfalls, Oscar’s Grind indeed appears to be one of the safer bets out there. Make sure to bring along a good bankroll reserve.

Conclusion

Oscar’s grind is definitely one of the most exciting roulette strategies you will discover out there. It’s a painfully slow one and therefore not to everyone’s taste. However, if you can look past that, and set your mind on long-term success, you may just find Oscar’s Grind to be the right roulette strategy for you.

The system is clearly a low-risk one, and you need to be consistent for it to work and to realize profit. However, all of these things are in fact, quite feasible and something that you need not worry about at all. The one-unit profit is indeed not to everyone’s taste, but it’s a way to really up the ante and make the best out of your experience.

We still maintain that Oscar’s Grind is actually a very good long-term strategy and one that – if you arm yourself with a bit of patience – can really get you some excellent results!
